The Aussies are at it again.
No, not winning the cricket — they’re testing glow-in-the-dark road paint. Yep, actual luminous tarmac.
It charges up during the day and glows gently at night to help drivers stay on course.
Imagine the M1 looking like the world’s biggest Scalextric track.
Bonzer!
Sounds brilliant, right? But before we all shout “no worries, mate!” and start painting the A52 neon green, let’s pause for a sec.
Down Under — or just down the wrong road?
It’s easy to get dazzled (literally) by innovation. Glow paint looks great in theory — more visibility, fewer tired drivers, fewer accidents.
But this is the UK.
We don’t glow, we drizzle.
Would this fancy Aussie paint survive a week of road salt, potholes, and horizontal rain? Would the glow still show when your headlights bounce off a wet road at midnight in Milton Keynes?
We’re not so sure.
Still, fair play to them. It’s bold thinking. And that’s the real lesson here — we need more of it.
Maybe not glow paint specifically, but the kind of “what if?” innovation that gets us rethinking how to make our roads safer and smarter.
What the UK actually needs
At Road Angel, we’re all for seeing the light — we just prefer it on your dash, not the road itself.
Smart tech that warns you about speed zones, cameras, and hazards before you even spot them? That’s the kind of bright idea we can get behind.
Because while glowing tarmac might look cool on TikTok, we’d rather keep you out of trouble in the real world.
Your turn, mate
So what do you reckon — should the UK nick this Aussie idea? Or should we focus on smarter cars, not shinier roads?
Tell us what you’d do if you were in charge of the UK transport budget.
We’ll share the best (and boldest) ideas in next month’s Road Angel newsletter — just in time for our Halloween special.
Until then, keep it shiny side up, headlights on, and maybe leave the glow sticks to the festivals.
